Dr. Rick Olsen
Chair of Dept. of Communication Studies

Dr. Rick Olsen is department chair of the department of communication studies at UNCW. He has taught a wide variety of courses including research methods, debate, and the rhetoric of popular culture. While doing this research he has studied topics as diverse as Martha Stewart and the NBA Draft. He also facilitates train the trainer programs for the USMC. He has been using TurningTechnologies for years and was one of the faculty advocates to bring it to his campus as a campus-wide solution. He has received several teaching awards including the highest campus award from the Board of Trustees at UNCW. When he’s not teaching or writing, he enjoys playing basketball and making music. He and his co-workers have a band called The Schoolboys.

By using clickers in his large enrollment class he has increased attendance (even at 8 a.m.), comprehension and even student satisfaction.
